Obama: It takes me by surprise how people believe Putin outplaying me

“The actions of Russia’s leadership do not make the country any stronger. Rather, the country earns more attention and negative reputation”
Baku – APA. The actions of Russian national leader Vladimir Putin only lead to a fall in Russia's position as an international player. All that he did creates for Russia a reputation that is not so good.
The statement was made by US President Barack Obama when he was told of opinions that Russian President Vladimir Putin is outplaying him, APA reported citing news.liga.net.
“What takes me by surprise is that how people – not only my critics – believe it,” he said.
He recalled that when he became president in 2008, the US was undergoing the consequences of the worst global financial crisis and was simultaneously involved in two wars – almost single-handedly.
"America's positions at the time were roughly on the same level with Russia’s but lower than China’s. And the number of jobs in the country decreased by 800,000. When Putin came to power, the Russian economy was growing and the government intended to diversify it. His ‘brilliant’ ideas led to the fact that Russia’s economy shrank by 4% this year,” he said.
He mentioned the isolation of the Russian Federation and the fact it is not only the US that has imposed sanctions on Russia but also countries that were once the closest trade partners of Russia.
“Libya and Syria are the only allies of Russia in the Middle East. And these countries are collapsing now. To save the Assad regime, Putin sends to Syria weapons and soldiers, thus risking resentment with the entire Sunni world,” he stressed.
According to the president, the actions of Russia’s leadership do not make Russia any stronger. Rather, the country earns more attention and negative reputation.
“As a stronger player, I suggested Russia returns to a path of development that would ensure the welfare of its citizens. It’s not we who are under sanctions and whose economy shrank by 4%. Putin’s actions only strengthen his reputation within the country. It’s an easy thing to do a state has the media under control. But this is not a wise step. The majority of Syrians now regards Russians as an enemy because of Russian military action in this country. And all the Sunnis of the Middle East think of Putin as one who drops bombs on children. Putin should be concerned by it; his country has a large Muslim community,” said Obama.
Obama stressed that he is not involved in any competition with Putin and wants the Russian Federation to be a successful country as well as an effective and responsible international player along with countries like China and Japan.
"I hope Putin comes to understand that supporting Assad is not that successful long-term strategy,” he noted.
