A Brief History Of The Faulty No-Fly List

Obama wants to prevent anyone on the faulty no-fly list from buying a gun

Obama called on Congress to ban everyone on the no-fly list from buying a gun in his Oval Office address on Sunday. It was one of the president’s few concrete proposals in a speech meant to reassure Americans after the deadly terror attacks in San Bernardino. But the list, which keeps nearly 50,000 people from flying, has a 14-year history of secrecy and snafus.
“Congress should act to make sure no one on a no-fly list is able to buy a gun. What could possibly be the argument for allowing a terrorist suspect to buy a semiautomatic weapon?” he asked. A day earlier, Obama called the loophole “insane” during his radio address, and he also called out the issue during his first statement after the San Bernardino shooting.

But pundits and politicians on both sides are questioning the sanity of basing 2nd Amendment restrictions on a system that has already proven to be a faulty abuse of government power. Here’s a look back at the no-fly list’s secret, shifty history.
