Dropkick Murphys - The Green Fields of France

Blogger's note:  Today is designated Memorial Day.  My grandfather died in France in just before The War to End All Wars ended.  It was to end on the 11th hour 11th day, and 11th month which was to masonic delight.  My father had to leave school to assist in the survival of the family.  His oldest brother lost an arm, and that ended his professional soccer career.  The family being Catholic were treated as second class citizens in a colony of England.  That colony was Scotland, and yet they were expected to fight for "their" country.

My dad served in the merchant marine during the second World War, and when he came home I did not know him.  I seldom saw him.

How many others of all nationalities can remember war?   How many countries has my country waged war on?  When will it ever end or will it ever?  I am mindful of Bob Dylan's hymn "With God On Our Side".

Through many dark hour
I’ve been thinkin’ about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can’t think for you
You’ll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side

So now as I’m leavin’
I’m weary as Hell
The confusion I’m feelin’
Ain’t no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God’s on our side
He’ll stop the next war
