Hate-Baiting For Dollars

An Open Letter to The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC)
To the Board of Directors:
Fifty years ago, it would have been unthinkable, even laughable, to believe that like minded people who support the United States Constitution, the rule of law, and believe in government accountability, would one day be characterized as anti-government. While George Orwell might be smiling in his grave, I'm at a loss to find the humor in it. I don't see anything funny about the 998 Anti-Government 'Patriot' Groups you currently have listed on your website. Interestingly, you state that these "anti-government groups do not necessarily advocate or engage in violence or other criminal activities" and that "many anti-government groups are not racist." Well, then what's your problem?
Apparently it's about the "groundless conspiracy theorizing" these groups engage in; you know, all that talk about a New World Order, globalization, U.N. Agenda 21, or all that crazy talk about the North American Union (an attempt to merge America with Canada and Mexico); all of which are well documented facts. Then there are those baseless fears about gun confiscation and theories about the Jews working behind the scenes to control financial institutions and the government (those are your words; not mine). And, according to you, these anti-government groups are populated by a bunch of anti-Semitic, white men. Really? And just how did you arrive at such a conclusion and how did you identify all these various anti-government groups? Oh, I see: "The Intelligence Project" made these determinations. (No, dear readers, this is not satire. Please go to the SPLC website and check this out for yourself. It's very informative material; I mean, for those still reading on a sixth grade level.)
I have to hand it to you, that while most of us were asleep and/or distracted with family duties, careers and life in general, you were busy infiltrating our government agencies and lobbying our elected officials to alter laws. You also encouraged them to change policies and adopt a specific point of view concerning law-biding, patriotic citizens who have been projected into a fictitious, twisted narrative of your own making. Sadly, I must admit, you have convinced many; but only because they trusted you to tell the truth and assumed that your findings were based on facts; not fiction. Well, let me tell you two things about facts: (1) you don't get to choose them; and (2) facts don't have an expiration date. I think it's time to state some facts and turn your false narrative inside out for the entire world to see.
Before I begin, I'll offer this token of appreciation. You appear to have made an honest effort to expose a handful of real hate groups and you have stood up for people genuinely oppressed and victimized. Thank you. You're welcome. Now, moving along, I must tell you that your demonization of patriots, by referring to them as anti-government groups, is a line that has clearly crossed from fact to fiction. Of course, fiction is not illegal. You're entitled to your little make-believe world filled with patriotic devils who threaten your existence. However, I would be remiss if I didn't remind you that yelling "Fire!" in a crowed theater, though fiction it may be, can be a crime. In fact, if it results in someone's death, it's a very serious crime; making you culpable. I can't help but wonder how much longer it will be until you face a major lawsuit. Perhaps it will be a class-action suit for defamation; but I'm hoping for something meatier. I foresee criminal charges along the lines of criminal intent and/or conspiracy to do harm. Maybe that's not the right legal term, but you get my drift; or do you? I guess I should explain further.
In 2009, the State of Missouri, under the watchful eyes of Governor Jay Nixon, sent out a law enforcement sensitive document entitled: MIAC Strategic Report: The Modern Militia Movement. It was distributed to members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and others. In this report, potentially violent prone militia members were identified as those who oppose such things as: abortion, the United Nations, the New World Order, the North American Union, the Federal Reserve, gun control, illegal immigration, radio I.D. chips, and the income tax. Sound familiar? In other words, about three-fourths of the State citizenry was identified as potentially violent extremists; at least violent enough to warrant this special memo. The cause for the rise in extremism is blamed on various social, political, and economic factors. For example, during the 1960's and 1970's "female and minority empowerment caused a blow to white males." (I'm guessing my readers didn't know that. Well, that's because you missed this memo!) In addition, the MIAC report explained that these potentially extremist militia members includes those who "are usually supporters of the former Presidential candidates: Ron Paul, Chuck Baldwin, and Bob Barr" (I bet you didn't know that exercising your rights and supporting a legitimate Presidential candidate could be considered a dangerous and subversive act). Apparently, these named individuals didn't take too kindly to being painted with such a broad brush; a brush that equated them with violent extremists. When this document was discovered, the three men drafted a letter to State officials and demanded that they cease the circulation of "this kind of nonsense." However, it appears that this kind of nonsense continues to be disseminated in other parts of our government. I wonder if you had anything to do with that? Well, let's find out.
Judicial Watch recently obtained documents from the Department of Defense, dating back to as recently as 2013, which included an Equal Opportunity Training Manual with a section entitled: Extremism. In this section, the government seeks to enlighten the trainees about "extremist ideologies." The sources referenced include the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and . . . well, what do you know . . . the Southern Poverty Law Center, which is cited several times throughout the document. Do you feel culpable yet? No? Well, I'm not done. You see, the manual cites you as the authority when describing some of the characteristics of extremist groups; you know, such horrible things as: lauding Southern culture, flying the Confederate flag, opposing interracial marriage, or disliking homosexuality. However, as the manual continues its characterization, I found myself a bit confused. It wasn't quite clear whether they were describing extremists or the Southern Poverty Law Center, because it describes people who: don't like to deal with the facts, routinely place labels on their opponents, make sweeping claims and judgments, tend to get caught up in logical fallacies and false associations, exaggerate the significance of information that confirms their prejudices, frame their arguments in a way that intimidates others, make predictions about the dire consequences of inaction, deliberately lie and distort with little remorse, direct their hatred towards individuals, exhibit a reverence for propaganda, adopt a paranoid and hypersensitive style, and, finally, they expect that others will accept their assertions on faith. Well, I guess if the shoe fits . . .
It only gets better. Did you know that the colonists who wanted to be free from British rule were extremists? Oh, yes, they were; at least according to this Department of Defense training manual. Also, if you place the interests of your own nation above the interests of another nation, you're an extremist. If you're intolerant of another religion, you're an extremist. If you don't believe that six million Jews were killed in the Holocaust, you're an extremist. If you don't believe that Timothy McVeigh represents the heart and mind of the militant patriot movement and was the brainchild behind the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 (which supposedly destroyed the building with a single truck bomb), then you're probably an extremist. And finally, if you don't believe that illiterate, goat herding Muslims from the caves of Afghanistan were the ones who hijacked four planes on September 11, 2001, with box cutters, and defeated the most sophisticated military defense system in the world, slamming their planes into the twin towers (which miraculously fell into their own footprints; as did WCT-7 later that day) and also struck the Pentagon, destroying a large portion of one wing, well, . . . you might just be an extremist.
Oh, but there's more. "Many extremists will talk of individual liberties, state's rights, and how to make the world a better place." Really? I mean, wow. That's shocking. How can we possibly tolerate a society filled with people who respect the rights of individuals and long to make the world a better place? Did you know that some extremist members also go into the military just "to learn how to defend themselves and their ideals" and "this is why military extremists present a threat to public safety?" Tell me it isn't so. Had enough of this kind of nonsense yet? I know I have. So, let me get to the point.
On January 26, 2016, a loving husband, father, rancher and American patriot was gunned down by law enforcement officers in a military style ambush on a highway in southeastern Oregon. His name was Robert "LaVoy" Finicum. The general public hasn't been told all the facts in this case, but I will tell you a notable one. Neither LaVoy, nor any passenger in his vehicle, had committed or had been charged with a violent crime of any kind. His killing was unjustified. So, why did it happen? I'll tell you why; because of people like you, who preach hate and yell "Fire!" where there is no fire. When government agencies cite you as an authority on extremism, they're allowing you to promote an alarmist narrative that doesn't really exist, but state and federal officials believe it does. The result is that law enforcement personnel tend to get "all jacked-up" by your hate rhetoric. It makes them feel threatened; creating an emotional situation that incites aggression and anticipates violence; and in the case of LaVoy Finicum, this preconditioning led to the unnecessary use of deadly force. I hope you're proud of yourself.
There are a hundred ways LaVoy could have been apprehended safely that day, but those ways were not given priority. Why? Because of you; and others just like you. You're culpable in this man's death and a portion of his blood is now on your hands and on the hands of all those who've been propagating your tripe. It leaves all of us with a nagging question: why do you do this? I mean, are there really 998 anti-government patriot groups in the United States? Seriously? It sounds more like an oxymoron to me: anti-government patriot? How asinine. Pardon my frankness, but I think you're a liar, a fraud and disgrace to the very concepts of truth, justice and law. And it's even worse than that. I think you're an anti-American propaganda machine, hiding behind the color of law. I think you're deliberately embracing a strategy of tension that's an essential part of a very old game; one where a class of predatory vermin gets to exploit human weakness and credulity; you know, for profit. So, let's just call it by its real name: hate-baiting for dollars. What a disgusting way to earn a living; presenting yourself as a do-gooder; all the while disseminating your poison of hate under the cloak of darkness. Problem. Reaction. Solution. Then, you laugh all the way to the bank. I think you're the real extremist who poses a clear and present danger to this nation; intending to do it harm. I can only hope that justice will soon be served and you'll be placed on America's list of enemy combatants. Though you may not hold a gun in your hand, you've been steadily wielding a force much more powerful: the mighty pen. Well, you're not the only one who knows how to use one of those.
Thankfully, the American people are waking up to your bag of tricks and so are our elected officials and government agencies. Soon, they'll begin kicking you out of their offices and will stop citing you and others (like the ADL) as an authority on hate groups; because you're nothing of the sort. You're just self-appointed hate-baiters; so, consider your "Intelligence Project" now exposed and discredited. Of course, in addition to profiting from hate, we know you really do hate some things. For example, you pretty much hate anyone who has an opinion. You hate dissent, discourse and debate. You hate the idea of powerful people being held accountable for their lawlessness. You especially hate facts, because they're a nuisance and get in the way of your false narrative. You hate everything that makes America strong, free and independent. I also think you hate honest, hard working people who achieve great things and enjoy success. I can only imagine what your idea of equality looks like. I suspect it's a condition where we're all equally poor, miserable, dependant, and subservient to a handful of predatory elitists. Well, let me tell you something: that's not America; and it will never be America. The world has already had its Bolshevik moment and, in case you missed the memo, it was rejected.
You thought you could destroy this country and the Constitution of the United States, but you've failed. You've failed because you didn't understand that the rights and ideals protected and expressed in that Great Document are not merely written on paper, they're also written on our hearts and minds. Those rights and ideals are also encoded in our generational DNA and cannot be altered; not by you; not by anyone. In spite of all your hate-baiting, patriotic American citizens are rising to defend their liberties and ensure that the U.S. Constitution continues to be the supreme law of the land. Now, let me offer an olive branch. Should you decide to turn from your path of self-serving hate and experience a change of heart, we would be glad to have you join us. Have a blessed day.
