Texas Secession?

TEXIT: Texas Republicans, Including State Rep, Call For State To Secede Amid Federal Election Shenanigans

The term TEXIT has gone viral on social media as multiple Republican lawmakers float the idea of secession if the federal government continues to disenfranchise Texans by allowing other states to flaunt election law with zero repercussions.

A lawsuit filed by Texas and backed by dozens of other states that sought to hold Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, and Wisconsin accountable for allegedly illegally altering election laws was thrown out by the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday, leaving many citizens frustrated with both U.S. political parties.

Texas GOP chair Allen West said the Supreme Court ruling effectively decreed that states will face no repercussions for violating the Constitution, and suggested that the only solution may be secession in order to form a union of states that will actually abide by the Constitution:

In a statement, Texas GOP Chair Allen West responded to the decision, and argued that in the tossing of the “constituionally legitimate and critical” lawsuit, SCOTUS has “decreed that a state can take unconstitutional actions and violate its own election law,” suggesting secession may be a solution:

‘Resulting in damaging effects on other states that abide by the law, while the guilty state suffers no consequences. This decision establishes a precedent that says states can violate the US constitution and not be held accountable. This decision will have far-reaching ramifications for the future of our constitutional republic. Perhaps law-abiding states should bond together and form a Union of states that will abide by the constitution.’

On Tuesday, Texas State Rep. Kyle Biedermann announced plans to file a motion that would allow Texans to vote on a referendum deciding whether the state should return to its “status as an independent nation”:

“The federal government is out of control and does not represent the values of Texans. That is why I am committing to file legislation this session that will allow a referendum to give Texans a vote for the State of Texas to reassert its status as an independent nation,” Biedermann wrote.

Additionally, conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh noted this weekthat he has observed a significant trend towards support for some type of secession from both sides of the political spectrum.

“There cannot be a peaceful coexistence of two completely different theories of life, theories of government, theories of how we manage our affairs,” Limbaugh said, adding that he believes “I actually think that we’re trending toward secession.”

The hashtag #TEXIT began trending on Twitter shortly after the announcement that SCOTUS rejected Texas’ election lawsuit.

The Texas Nationalist Movement, which was founded in 2005, announced this week that Biedermann’s motion had been filed in the 87th Session of the Texas Legislature.
