McCarthy Ousted from Position as Speaker of the House in Historic Vote

Florida Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz filed a motion against Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and eight hard-right Republicans joined 208 Democrats in supporting McCarthy’s removal, as 210 Republicans tried and failed to keep the speaker in place. Gaetz accused McCarthy of cutting a secret deal with Biden to fund Ukraine. Republican House Rules Committee member Thomas Massie objected to McCarthy’s removal and said that it was a referendum on the institution and the institution will fail. McCarthy’s ouster may cost Republicans their house majority.

Florida Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz filed a motion against Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and eight hard-right Republicans joined 208 Democrats in supporting McCarthy’s removal, as 210 Republicans tried and failed to keep the speaker in place.

Gaetz sought McCarthy’s removal after the speaker worked with House Democrats to pass a stopgap spending bill, known as a continuing resolution, to extend government funding through November 17. Tuesday’s vote was the first to remove a House speaker in more than 100 years and the first successful such vote in American history.

Additional funding for Ukraine, a source of outrage on the right, was stripped from the bill. However, Gaetz accused McCarthy of cutting a “secret side deal” with Joe Biden on providing additional funding to Ukraine in the form of a stand alone bill set for a later date. McCarthy denied the existence of any secret deal.
