We are concerned about Mumia's deteriorating health, as has been witnessed in recent weeks by his visiting doctor, clergy, counselors, teachers, family and friends. Evidence of intensifying Hepatitis C symptoms and possible development of the diabetes that nearly killed him a year ago calls for immediate and appropriate treatment.
We, therefore, urge you to DEMAND:

Immediate provision to Mumia of anti-viral treatment to cure his Hepatitis C condition that is, as his doctor testified in court, the persistent cause of worsening skin disease, almost certain liver damage, now extreme weight-gain and hunger, and other diabetic-like conditions.
Immediate release of all recent blood test results to Mumia's attorneys.
Vigilant monitoring of Mumia for signs of diabetes, especially of his blood sugar level, since a diabetes attack nearly killed Mumia last spring of 2015.

Mumia Abu-Jamal has spent more than half his life behind prison bars.

In 1982, he was charged and convicted on the charge of murder in the first degree over the shooting death of Philadelphia Police officer Daniel Faulkner.

At the time of his arrest Mumia Abu-Jamal was a supporter of the revolutionary MOVE organization, a former member of the Black Panther Party and a dissident radio journalist covering stories of police corruption and repression of people in the African-American community. He was president of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Association of Black Journalists. His uncompromising approach to reporting cost him work for mainstream news organizations, and taking on free-lance work, supplementing his income by driving a taxi cab. [3][4]

It is widely speculated that his fearless and uncompromising journalism and truth-telling was a little too inconvenient for certain entrenched interests, providing a motive to eliminate him.

There is overwhelming evidence of irregularities in the legal proceedings which convicted Mumia. Further, it appears that police and legal officials may have conspired to frame Mumia for the murder. [5][6][7]

The apparent injustice of Mumia’s incarceration and condemnation to death inspired legions of supporters around the world to rise up and lobby on his behalf. A partial victory was finally realized on December 7, 2011 when Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams announced he would no longer seek the death penalty for Abu-Jamal. His sentence was subsequently reduced to life with no possibility of parole. [8]

Currently, Mumia’s life is in jeopardy due to the effects of a Hepatitis-C infection believed to have been contracted from a blood transfusion he received after being shot during the ’81 encounter with Officer Faulkner. [9]

Mumia’s supporters, citing Mumia’s personal physician and esteemed medical authorities claim that the Philadelphia Department of Corrections (DOC) is deliberately withholding treatments for Hep-C from him and other prisoners suffering from the same malady. As of August of 2015, a lawsuit has been filed against the DOC demanding damages, injunctive relief and a declaration of unconstitutional denial of medical treatment in Mumia’s case. [10]

As these current events unfold, the Global Research News Hour attempts to shine a spotlight on Mumia’s situation with two guests.

Suzanne Ross is a clinical psychologist, a long-time anti-imperialist activist and representative of International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal. She breaks down the particulars of Mumia’s case from the time of his initial arrest and sentencing to the current fight for his life.

Glen Ford is executive editor of Black Agenda Report, an on-line resource detailing news and analysis from the black left. Ford places Mumia’s case in the context of a history of repression of the African-American population going back to the days of slavery. Ford explains how this repression escalated into a full-blown counter-insurgency starting in the late sixties, which includes the elimination of prominent black leaders like Martin Luther King, and the mass incarceration of blacks.

“We need a total transformation of the police, whom they represent, whom they are accountable to, how its members are recruited, and what kinds of people we should be recruiting.”
Internationally renowned political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal has just published a brilliant 15-page pamphlet about the challenge of the period in which we’re living in this country: the non-stop police murders of young people of color followed by one acquittal after another of the killer cops. Even when the unarmed young police victims are children, 11 and 12 years old as in the case of Tamir Rice, the police are let off without even a serious investigation. It’s not that this hasn’t happened before in US history. It has. But for many reasons there is a heightened consciousness about it today and it is a defining aspect of this decade. The police versus the people, usually people of color, and often children. There is no respite from this recurrent painful and outrageous saga except for the inspiring and courageous resistance of the young people in the streets, led by those of color. From Ferguson to Staten Island to the 120 college campuses that rose up last week we are seeing levels of courage and resistance in the face of militarized police on a massive scale that we have not seen since the 60’s and 70’s.

In this pamphlet, Mumia analyzes who the police are, including the roots of their control strategies as dating back to the policing of Black slaves in the colonies and subsequently in the thirteen states, most dramatically in the South and particularly South Carolina, but also in the North. He defines the necessity of control of the large slave population especially in states where whites were a minority, as necessary to maintain the level of exploitation slavery entails. He uses the Marxist analysis of the police as the enforcers of the will of the ruling class based on that class’s economic interests. He analyzes how that role continues in the post- slavery period to this day. A large oppressed minority population must continue to be controlled in order for the ruling forces to maintain their wealth by exploiting that population. Anything that threatens that exploitation and the control that is essential to it, will be fought by any means necessary. At great risk and great danger the exploited and oppressed classes will rise up when those conditions become so intolerable that significant sectors of that group converge in fighting back against the oppressors with a courage that is contagious and soon joined by others.
In today’s street uprisings the exploited have defined that exploitation as racial in character, involving in Ferguson such dramatic rip-offs in the city’s levying of fines upon fines on the poor to stuff its municipal coffers while imposing a vicious stop and frisk, and then arrest, policy to impose its total control over Black lives. Hence the Black Lives Matter Movement whose very name is a direct challenge to that exploitation and control. The message of “We can’t breathe” connects Eric Garner’s assassination by the police of Staten Island to the daily suffering of the people of Ferguson at the hands of their overseers, to the dozens of unarmed Black men and boys whose lives are snuffed out by a flick of the killer cop’s finger.

Mumia addresses with careful historical precision the development of the frequently referred to contradiction of the police themselves not profiting economically from their role, but carrying it out with such vicious enthusiasm. Some liberals and even leftists have tried to argue, sometimes even on the battle lines (as I myself heard one time, as the police were approaching to attack and assault us back in the 80’s), that the police are our brothers and, increasingly, our sisters. After all, they don’t benefit economically from their role as police. Tell that to Eric Garner or Mike Brown as they were being murdered and to the families of Sandra Brand and Tamir Rice who are mourning the loss of their beloved children at the hands of the police. Or to the hundreds of cities in the 60’s, that rose up in flames, such as Watts, Detroit, Newark and many others large and small. They were forced to rise up against both the horrible living conditions imposed on Black communities, and the police actions that attempted to defeat their uprisings. This dogmatic definition of “class enemy” clearly misses the racial character of class in this country. Oh yes, false consciousness. But the role of the police as the enforcers not only of the economic interests of the ruling class but as the enforcers of white supremacy, much like the KKK, has already been addressed profoundly in W.E.B. DuBois’s Black Reconstruction in America 1860-1880. Mumia provides this excellent 21st-Century update.
Mumia adds to the now common “slave patrol” analysis of pervasive police lawlessness and violent control of Black people with impunity by introducing the particular role of the Irish. Citing Noel Ignatiev’s book, How the Irish Became White, Mumia explains how the Irish played a special role in the development of the police, especially in New York and Philadelphia (but probably Boston as well, I would think) where they were transformed from despised immigrants in the 19^th century to major collaborators and enforcers of white supremacy in relation to people of color by the 20^th century. Initially forming violent gangs of self-defense, the Irish community morphed itself into a frontline enforcer of control over Black people. Interestingly, insofar as some of this analysis of the Irish gangs and their transformation into KKK-like defenders of “white power” is focused on Philadelphia where the Fraternal Order of Police, a particularly vicious and powerful police force, has targeted and framed both MOVE and Mumia. As a result, both the MOVE 9 and Mumia have spent more than 30 years in prison for alleged crimes they did not commit and the Fraternal Order of Police does everything it can to keep it that way, to prevent their release, and to cover up the history of the cover up and conspiracy to silence and kill these revolutionaries.

Mumia weaves through the history that clearly defines police as playing a role not much different from that of the KKK to the present, where the policy is obviously to allow any police officer fearful of Black people to claim self defense even where there was no attack, no gun, and no threat … and thus be acquitted of murder. We should note that “stand your ground” laws are thinly veiled rights granted to empower paranoid whites (seeing danger in every Black face, no matter how young) to control Blacks.
Mumia then tackles the challenge of “what to do.” He argues against meaningless reforms such as police wearing body cameras. (What good did that do in Staten Island where the cameraman filming the whole incident is the one then arrested and harassed, or with Rodney King, where the whole episode of the police’s vicious beating of Rodney is filmed and projected across the world on TV?) The inevitable result is the same: acquittal of the cop. He knocks the idea of community policing, where the community has no power much like the role the PLO agreed to in Oslo of policing the Palestinian population under Israeli control. The result was Palestinian police arresting and killing their own people. He points out the uselessness of anything that does not change the power relations between the people and the police and refers back to a piece Huey Newton wrote on community CONTROL of the police in 1980.
Mumia follows the spirit of Huey’s proposal. The basic principles and goals would be:
a) abolishing the existing police departments b) establishing a Citizen’s Peace Force to serve the local community needs c) selecting the persons serving in this capacity from their respective city council districts, and d) training those chosen and educating them in areas of urban problem solving.

Pie in the sky? In some ways, sure. But the young people in the streets are already demanding that the police be disarmed, that their use of tasers be immediately stopped given how many people have been killed by tasering and how it is used to intimidate as in the case of Sandra Bland. Opening up grand jury hearings, having police wear body cameras, or creating powerless civilian review boards will solve nothing. We need a total transformation of the police, whom they represent, whom they are accountable to, how its members are recruited, and what kinds of people we should be recruiting. We need the police living in the communities they serve and being subject to and accountable to the will of the people that they allegedly serve.
Former Black Panther Party member, New York 21 prisoner and, still later, New York State political prisoner for 19 years, Dhoruba bin Wahad has been talking about some of these ideas for several years now. A group in Harlem that includes longtime organizer Brother Shep and the Freedom Socialist Party has been meeting to discuss some of these ideas. And there are probably hundreds of others, if not thousands, trying to figure out some of these alternatives to the deadly occupation army the police are at this moment.
Truly a handbook discussing the roots and history of the police in this country, a class and historical analysis of who the police are, and finally a strategy for transforming the role/definition of the police and their power relationships with the people. This is a must read handbook for all those on the frontlines of the struggle against police terror in the Black and Latino communities. It is also an indispensable tool for those who want to understand how to analyze this struggle and how to be supportive to our young and heroic frontline fighters. Dare to struggle, dare to win!

Weren't groups like the Fruit

Weren't groups like the Fruit of Islam already doing something like this on local levels? I also recall that the Panthers shadowed cops in their heyday. I personally think nothing short of revolution is going to change the basic lawlessness and brutality of organized 'crime enforcement' or as they are more commonly known--law enforcement. They, as a whole, protect rampant criminality as long as it's being commited by state over-seers and proxies; while over-policing & criminalizing those who have historically provided free and low cost labor and/or continuous profit streams to the state: namely black folk. Unless the system itself is completely destroyed, they will always find a way to circumvent any attempts to alter or change the basic function of crime enforcement--to act as the patrol and, if need be--attack dog--of those who run this giant plantation.

Yes, I also want to say Free Mumia. In fact, I want to say Free all the prisoners. Turn the prison holding Mumia Abu-Jamal into a school and make him dean. And if you won’t free all the prisoners, free one who has been punished to a level that ought to satisfy any retributive scheme for any crime he might have committed. And if you won’t do that, free him because he was put into prison by a fraudulent and corrupt trial that hid as much evidence as it revealed, and fabricated the latter.
More importantly, Read Mumia. His new book is called Writing on the Wall: Selected Prison Writings of Mumia Abu-Jamal, and it includes commentaries by Mumia from 1982 through 2014. Mumia went ahead and made his prison a school — a school in history, in politics, and in morality. And his own moral teaching is primarily by example. He teaches the liberating lesson that, if you so choose, you can know right now that never ever will anyone be able to beat you down. You can be cheerful for the rest of your life and rest completely assured that nothing can ever take that away.
Why? Because Mumia was shot and beaten within an inch of his life by the police, who then tried to kill him in the hospital with cold air meant to bring death by pneumonia. Then he was framed up and railroaded into a “correctional” institution. Then he was subjected for as long as perhaps anyone alive to the torture of solitary confinement (which drives some to self-mutilation). He was essentially mock-executed twice with dates set for his murder by the state of Pennsylvania. And it’s never let up, with a new effort to kill him through denial of medical care this year.
Yet from day-1 in prison to this day, Mumia has been creating written and radio commentaries that go after every injustice in the world, including those committed by the very prison guards who threaten his life. And one cannot find a word of self-pity in any of them. Nor a word of self-indulgence or of narrow focus. From behind bars, Mumia sees the global perspective better than most on the outside. He takes on the war machine as determinedly as poverty and draws the connections between them. With no fear. No bitterness. No paranoia. No despair. No let up. And no lack of love and understanding.
And that’s not primarily why you should read Mumia. He’s not a great wrongly-imprisoned-black writer. He’s a great writer. And if he were free and on book tour, chances are certainly better that you would be reading him. Mumia’s commentaries from prison are as informed and more insightful than many from academia. And less compromising — Compromising being something he takes on effectively with his critiques of what W.E.B. Dubois called the Philadelphia Negro.
If you want a sports score on Mumia’s insights, how about a list of accurate predictions?
He predicted the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the murder of Trayvon Martin.
He predicted Colin Powell’s performance long before his U.N. speech: “[A]s he has done all of his professional, military life, the General will follow the orders he’s given, even if he is in disagreement with them.” —Aug. 30, 2001
He predicted war disasters before the wars. He predicted who George W. Bush and Barack Obama would be prior to Bush’s selection and Obama’s election (and nailed the theft of Florida for Bush in 2000 before it was completed). Of Obama he said:

If the impeachment does not work this time they will try again, and again any means necessary to end the Presidency of Donald Trump, for they do not want their swamp drained.

On Wednesday I listened to "Democracy Now", and later the Tucker Carlson Show. Each host was interviewing Jill Sellout Stein, but neither asked the key question. The key question for me would have been the following: "Jill, a hand recount of the votes in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania would probably not be completed by the December 19th deadline for the electoral votes. That would deny Trump the necessary votes to be elected President. That seems to be the Hillary strategy to steal the election, so why would the Green Party candidate shill for Hillary's election. Has Hillary, Bill, the Clinton Campaign, the DNC or others that are connected to the Clinton's approached you, and what were you offered?"

That would have been my question, but then again that is why I only operate in the "Fake News" section of journalism.

How about Sen. Cruz? He was not natural born, and there is doubt that his mother was born in the US. He is ineligible to run for President, but hey Obama did it why not him?

As for Rubio he was born in the US, but not of US citizens, so he too is not eligible to run for President. He has quite a few skeletons in his closet, and that is why they like him.

There is outrage on the outcome of the Dallas Cowboys versus the Green Bay Packers. Why is their outrage on this total distraction? Fans here belong to one of two tribes that support the circus of the "bread and circus".

It has become a game of less and less interest as commercials, reviews, more reviews, pregame shows of several well paid ex-jocks to tell us what must be done by each team to win. Then after the game the same go over and over the game and why one team won and one lost. The media has more covering a meaningless event than the do covering all of Africa.

It is done to take you mind off the reality of the day. It is the blue pill to keep you from seeing that you are accepting a police state as you are groped and searched when you enter the stadium.

Then there is more money to be made in the betting on the game than in the TV and commercials. So would it be any surprise to you that the games might be fixed? It isn't to me. Have you ever seen the pro football game where one team plays and the other merely shows up? Maybe the team that only showed up knew who the winner would be.

There is also a globalist plan to destroy national sports such as US football, and replace it with soccer. Could this be a step in that direction?

I remember the day well. A Customer Service Representative was promoted to Outside Sales, and he left just before lunch. His new job was to begin on the following Monday. He came back in at about an hour or two later. His face was white as a ghosts. He took a deep breath and said "President Kennedy has been killed."

It was a quiet at the bus stop in Newark that night, and the bus was dead silent. Just like today people are silent on the coup d'etat that happened that day in Dallas. It angers me that people can forget that at that day and time on the 11th month and the 22nd day our country was changed forever, and not for the better.

Many still believe that it is us versus them, and Democrat versus Republican when there is not a dime's worth of difference. The US and the world are run by a SSG (Secret Shadow Government).
