North Korea on Monday warned it will take “physical action” against South Korea and the United States over the allies’ decision to deploy an advanced U.S. missile defense system in South Korea.
North Korea’s military said it will strike the moment the two countries decide on where to place the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in South Korea, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
“Our military is ready to ruthlessly take strikes against (the enemies) and turn them into a sea of fire if we are given orders at this moment,” it said.
Senate Armed Services Committee chairman welcomes THAAD deployment in S. Korea
The chairman of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee has welcomed a decision to deploy the U.S. THAAD missile defense system in South Korea, saying China should rein in North Korea rather than trying to limit Seoul’s ability to defend itself.
South Korea and the U.S. on Friday announced they have officially decided to deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery in South Korea to cope with ever-growing nuclear and missile threats from North Korea.
China, which has long voiced opposition to THAAD in the South, strongly protested the decision, saying the deployment does not help achieve the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and hurts peace and stability in the region.
