China’s Night of the Long Knives
Totalitarian leaders need two things to survive. Unquestioned support of their “inner circle” and a pretense for action, i.e. an incident, real or made up. The decisive point in time for the rise of totalitarianism in Germany in the 1930s were the decisive events of German leader of June 30 to July 2, 1934, normally referred to as “The Night of the Long Knives”. In a swift action, the ascending German Leader took action against the SA, the Sturm Abeilung, or the Brown Shirts. The leader of the National Socialists could not have gotten to this point without the Brown Shirts, the rough, violent, undisciplined element vital to his rise. Yet he was on shaky ground and for years been developing the Black Shirts as his even more inner circle. In several days of violence, the German leader used his Black Shirts to round up, execute, and eliminate the Brown Shirts citing their “crimes”. It was classic, thuggish, treacherous, no boundaries, totalitarianism. Mr. Hitler couldn’t live without the Brown Shirts until he needed them no more and dispensed with them like a used plastic utensil via the Black Shirts.
Mr. Xi is showing similar traits in his consolidation of power within the Chinese Communist Party. He took power in 2012 but really didn’t begin his slow motion Night of the Long Knives until the unprecedented Party Congress in October 2022 where Xi had his predecessor unceremoniously and infamously marched out of the room. A tactic the German Leader never performed, but something Mr. Hussein (an admirer of the German leader) of Iraq did routinely and would have been proud of. This Party Congress marked the unprecedented third term election of Mr. Xi, from this point on, it was game on, as Xi created an accelerated wave of purges that resulted in the large-scale purge of late December 2023 where Xi proffered an unequivocal teaching point and life lesson to anyone that might consider opposing him for leadership of the CCP. This was Xi’s “Night of the Long Knives”.

Last modified on Wed 23 Aug 2023 15.31 EDTChina’s leader, Xi Jinping, unexpectedly skipped a scheduled speech at a key multilateral business forum in South Africa on Tuesday.
Xi arrived in Johannesburg for the Brics summit on Monday evening on what is only his second international trip this year, after visiting Moscow in March. He was met on the airport tarmac by South African president Cyril Ramaphosa.
According to the summit schedule, Xi was expected to attend the forum and deliver remarks alongside other leaders on Tuesday. But instead his speech was read out by his commerce minister, Wang Wentao.

The one American who really should give thanks for his good fortune today is Joe Biden.
Lucky Joe. President without trying, popped his head out of his basement a few times, took lots of naps. The Chauncey Gardiner of presidents has been touched by a rainbow, and how the media rejoices!
“President-Elect Biden.” They can’t say it often enough when they ask hard-hitting questions about how terrible Donald Trump is.
Biden’s new team is “like the Avengers . . . the superheroes to come and save us all,” gushed Yamiche Alcindor of PBS.
They are “not going to be political,” declared NBC’s Andrea Mitchell. LOL.
On MSNBC, Nicolle Wallace waxed lyrical about Biden’s “empathy and humanity . . . [It] is all an implicit rebuke of Donald Trump’s foreign policy stewardship,” she said.
“Joy to the world, the Trumps are gone,” sang ABC’s Ana Navarro on “The View.” “Let us receive Joe Biden.”
Did you see his socks! Navy blue with dog prints. How marvelously . . . not Trump.
This is the only distinction Biden has: he’s not Trump.

China must strengthen its grip on the internet to ensure broader social and economic goals are met, state news agency Xinhua reported on Saturday citing comments from President Xi Jinping, underlining a hardening attitude towards online content.
Under Xi’s rule China has increasingly tightened its grip on the internet, concerned about losing influence and control over a younger generation who are driving a diverse and vibrant online culture from livestreaming to blogs.
“Without web security there’s no national security, there’s no economic and social stability, and it’s difficult to ensure the interests of the broader masses,” Xinhua cited Xi as saying.
“We cannot let the internet become a platform for disseminating harmful information and stirring up trouble with rumours,” he added in comments made at a cyber security conference in Beijing, Xinhua said.
Chinese regulators have been driving a sweeping crackdown on media content, which has been gaining force since last year, spreading a chill among content makers and distributors.
China is also looking to take a leading role globally in internet regulation and technology more broadly, which has come into sharp focus amid a trade standoff with the United States and an arms race over technology.
The United States banned sales of parts and software to Chinese telecoms equipment maker ZTE earlier this week, which the Chinese firm said on Friday threatened its survival. ZTE uses U.S. chips in many of its smartphones.
The ZTE case had “triggered a heated debate” in China about advanced technology, Xinhua said in a separate report on Saturday, adding mastering high-end technologies such as chips was “key” to becoming a strong nation.

In what is being characterized as a rare address to the world’s largest fighting force, President Xi Jinping on January 04 urged the Chinese military to be ready for war and ‘don’t fear death’.
As the beat of the war drums gets louder in East Asia and abroad, Xi’s rare speech to the military kicked off the New Year with a grim warning, as China and other countries in the region could be preparing for a turbulent year ahead.
China’s soldiers should “neither fear hardship nor death,” Xi told thousands of troops during an inspection visit Wednesday to the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) Central Theater Command in northern Hebei province, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

On the surface, things seem pretty quiet in mid-July 2016. The biggest news stories are about the speculation surrounding Donald Trump’s choice of running mate, the stock market in the U.S. keeps setting new all-time record highs, and the media seems completely obsessed with Taylor Swift’s love life. But underneath the surface, it is a very different story. As you will see below, the conditions for a “perfect storm” are coming together very rapidly, and the rest of 2016 promises to be much more chaotic than what we have seen so far.
Let’s start with China. On Tuesday, an international tribunal in the Hague ruled against China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea. The Chinese government announced ahead of time that they do not recognize the jurisdiction of the tribunal, and they have absolutely no intention of abiding by the ruling. In fact, China is becoming even more defiant in the aftermath of this ruling. We aren’t hearing much about it in the U.S. media, but according to international news reports Chinese president Xi Jinping has ordered the People’s Liberation Army “to prepare for combat” with the United States if the Obama administration presses China to abandon the islands that they are currently occupying in the South China Sea…
“Chinese president Xi Jinping has reportedly ordered the People’s Liberation Army to prepare for combat,” reports Arirang.com. “U.S.-based Boxun News said Tuesday that the instruction was given in case the United States takes provocative action in the waters once the ruling is made.”

A U.S. aircraft carrier and fighter jets were already sent to the region in anticipation of the ruling, with the Chinese Navy also carrying out exercises near the disputed Paracel islands.
Last October, China said it was “not frightened” to fight a war with the U.S. following an incident where the guided-missile destroyer USS Lassen violated the 12-nautical mile zone China claims around Subi and Mischief reefs in the Spratly archipelago.
Meanwhile, the relationship between the United States and Russia continues to go from bad to worse. The installation of a missile defense system in Romania is just the latest incident that has the Russians absolutely steaming, and during a public appearance on June 17th Russian President Vladimir Putin tried to get western reporters to understand that the world is being pulled toward war…
“We know year by year what’s going to happen, and they know that we know. It’s only you that they tell tall tales to, and you buy it, and spread it to the citizens of your countries. You people in turn do not feel a sense of the impending danger – this is what worries me. How do you not understand that the world is being pulled in an irreversible direction? While they pretend that nothing is going on. I don’t know how to get through to you anymore.”
And of course the Russians have been feverishly updating and modernizing their military in preparation for a potential future conflict with the United States. Just today we learned that the Russians are working to develop a hypersonic strategic bomber that is going to have the capability of striking targets with nuclear warheads from outer space.
Unfortunately, the Obama administration does not feel a similar sense of urgency. The size of our strategic nuclear arsenal has declined by about 95 percent since the peak of the Cold War, and many of our installations are still actually using rotary phones and the kind of 8 inch floppy disks for computers that were widely used back in the 1970s.
I don’t expect war with China or Russia to erupt by the end of 2016. Of much more immediate concern is what is going on in the Middle East. The situation in Syria continues to deteriorate, but it is Israel that could soon be the center of attention.
Back in March, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Obama administration wanted to revive the peace process in the Middle East before Obama left office, and that a UN Security Council resolution that would divide the land of Israel and set the parameters for a Palestinian state was still definitely on the table…

China: Japan's Risky Jet Scramble 'Destroyed Peace and Stability in Region'
Tensions continue to mount in the East China Sea as Beijing now finds itself encircled by increasingly hostile neighbors bolstered by the Obama administration’s meddling.
On Monday, China’s defense ministry issued a stern statement to Japan regarding a scramble of military aircraft that looks to heat up mounting tensions in the East China Sea tinderbox.
Two Japanese fighter jets took “provocative actions” at high speed flying directly towards a pair of Chinese fighter jets that were carrying out patrols over the contested region on June 17, the defense ministry said in a statement without specifying exactly where the incident took place.
Beijing alleges that the Japanese pilots used fire-control radar to “light up” the Chinese aircraft according to the statement. Japan’s senior military officer acknowledged there was a scramble, but denied any radar lock of the Chinese jet occurred or that the incident turned dangerous.
“The Japanese plane’s provocative actions caused an accident in the air, endangering the safety of personnel on both side, and destroying the peace and stability in the region,” China’s Defense Ministry said while arguing that the Chinese pilots “responded resolutely.”
The statement regarding the incident follows Japan’s top military commander accusing China of escalating military tensions in the East China Sea and acknowledging that Japanese ‘emergency’ scrambles to counter Chinese jets doubled over the past three months.
The two countries continue to clash over the ownership of a group of islands that lie about 220km (140 miles) northeast of Taiwan, known as the Senkakus in Tokyo and the Diaoyu Islands in Beijing.
China worries that a recent defense agreement signed between Washington and Tokyo that provides Japan with full and equal defense contracting privileges as American companies will result in a more militaristic policy from their neighbor and long-time foe.
Those concerns appear to be well placed with the United States, India and Japan engaging in massive naval exercises along China’s eastern flank as part of the Obama administration’s bid to encircle China.
The country also faces pressure over a separate batch of islands in the increasingly hostile South China Sea region. Several countries hold competing claims to the Spratly and Paracel Islands although under the Law of the Sea Treaty experts believe Beijing has the sole claim to the territory.
Despite China’s ironclad claim to those contested islands, Washington who refuses to sign onto the same Treaty continues to call on Beijing to observe the process laid out in the agreement while maintaining a constant naval presence in the region.

Why Washington is Unlikely to Make Waves
Washington is seemingly playing down its belligerent rhetoric toward Beijing ahead of the leadership transition in the US and China.
The 15th Shangri-la Dialogue defense summit that brought together over 600 delegates from 51 countries became a particular challenge to US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.
"The challenge for US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter at the 15th Shangri-la Dialogue (SLD) this year was to deliver an address sufficiently convincing on the US security commitment to the region that it would reassure Washington's allies and partners, without appearing unduly to raise the temperature of relations with China," Dr. Euan Graham, Director of the International Security Program at the Lowy Institute, notes in his article for The Interpreter.
Carter is well known for his belligerent stance toward China's activities in the South China Sea.

However, despite growing tensions between Washington and Beijing, "Carter's pitch in Singapore was loftier and more rhetorical, identifying 'commitment, strength and inclusion' as core precepts for the US approach to the region," Graham underscores.
"The key messages are that US influence is benign, its core interests widely are shared in the region, and its networking power is a force for deepening cooperation — bilateral, trilateral, and multilateral," the academic continues.
Graham points out that in what may be his last address to the Singapore-hosted security gathering Carter "notably did not call out" Beijing's "behavior" in specific terms.
"Nor was there any repeat call this year to reverse course on island-building and militarization. This left some delegates wondering if the US was in fact backing down," the academic stresses.
But that is not all: Admiral Harry Harris of US Pacific Command was remarkably silent during the summit. It should be noted that Harris is yet another advocate of a muscular US response to China's island-building.
Thus, unsurprisingly, during the latest high-level economic and security talks in Beijing the US and China made a little if any progress.
"Even Senator John McCain delivered his speech at a separate location in Singapore, inter alia giving his blessing for TPP ratification but disappointing many in the region by failing to mention the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea as part of the 'rules-based order'," Graham notes.
According to the academic, the reason behind the US delegation's relatively pacific stance is that high-level US-China economic and security talks were taking place nearly simultaneously in Beijing.
It would be wrong, however, to assume that the US is about to drastically change its Asia pivot policy.
During the summit Carter repeated his rhetorical assertion that Beijing's actions in the South China Sea "could end up erecting a Great Wall of self-isolation" triggering a backlash from the Chinese delegation headed by Admiral Sun Jianguo a day later.
It seems that by such an unnecessarily tough approach toward China Washington is shooting itself in the foot.
"The timing of the meetings, combined with tensions over the South China Sea — where the US is challenging Beijing's assertion of sovereignty over islands, reefs and surrounding waters claimed by other countries — limited prospects for breakthroughs on issues such as trade and investment barriers and China's currency policy," Felicia Schwartz and Mark Magnier of the Wall Street Journal emphasize.
Both this year's Shangri-la Dialogue summit and the Strategic and Economic Dialogue in Beijing are the last for the Obama administration.
At the same time China will face its own important leadership transition in 2017, when five of the seven members of the Politburo Standing Committee — China's top decision-making body — are expected to step down.
In light of this it is unlikely that the relationship between the two countries will undergo serious changes in the near future.
